Crime and Punishment Tour

Be emerged in one of our prestigious Victorian Court Rooms, learn about the court room, hear stories of past cases and participate in a mini Mock Trial.  Follow the stairs down to the cells below the Court room, meet people who worked and lived in the prison, learn about how prisoners had to pay for luxuries such as their bed and blankets!  Walk around the women’s cell and observe what they were tasked with while incarcerated.  Follow the tour down to the cave cells cut into the sandstone beneath the Gaol, witness the condemned cell and the pits.  Learn about how the Gaol was used as a holding place for prisoners to be transported to Australia and America, and the lives of those prisoners once in Australia.

The Galleries of Justice Museum is home to the HM Prison Service Collection.  Walk through the galleries detailing the progression of prison reform and view artefacts from prisons and made by prisoners themselves.
