IT’S NOT EVERY DAY YOU EXPECT TO FIND A GHOST’S IMAGE ON YOUR CAMERA but Chris Dilks and his partner Amanda Sinclair did go on a ghost hunt! Chris and Amanda joined a paranormal investigation at The Galleries of Justice Museum in the heart of Nottingham’s Lace Market as a bit of a laugh but their scepticism soon turned to amazement.

Says Chris: ‘Amanda and I decided to go on one of the tours of the museum one evening. Amanda hadn’t been before and really wanted to go. I decided to take my camera on the off-chance I could get some good shots. I took about 30 dreadful shots and one really good one, so it was well worth it! During the tour I hung back on my own, when the rest of the group had moved on to the next room on the tour because I didn’t want to spoil the experience for everyone else with the flashes from my camera. When everyone else had left the Sheriff’s Dungeon, Amanda came back to see what I was up to and asked me to take a shot of the mannequin sat in the corner. I did so but thought no more of it. It was only after we had left that we noticed how bizarre the image looked. The mannequin looked solid in the gloomy light of the dungeon – a solid, brown colour, as though it was made out of wood, but we were a few feet away from it. Irrespective of what it is actually made from, the image I have taken appears to be transparent. We can clearly see the wall of the cave through the mannequin, which is awesome!’

Gary Holmes, General Manager at the Galleries of Justice Museum, commented: ‘It is indeed a very unusual image that Chris has captured and it cannot easily be explained. Over the years we have received quite a few images from visitors which, quite honestly have baffled us. We have also heard unfathomable and mystifying tales both from guests and members of staff. It’s just one of those things that we have come to expect at The Galleries of Justice Museum. It is a very old building and has witnessed some terrible times in history… and I am sure it has many tales to tell!’

Maria from ‘Spiritualeyes’, one of the Paranormal Investigation Teams who regularly visits The Galleries of Justice says: ‘This doesn’t surprise me at all. There are many spirits in the building, some of them like to make themselves known to us and others only make their presence felt on rare occasions. The Sheriff’s Dungeon is a particularly ‘active’ area and the museum itself is reported to have the most lively poltergeists in the UK.’

Ghost Tours are held on the first Wednesday of every month and Terror Tours on the
last Friday of every month at the museum – these tours are extremely popular so it is advisable to book in advance. Telephone reception on Nottingham 0115 9520555 or check the website www.galleriesofjustice.org.uk . But places on ‘Spirtualeyes’ paranormal investigations need to be booked through the organiser Maria on 07855 196410 or through their website www.spiritualeyes.co.uk.

THE GALLERIES OF JUSTICE MUSEUM AND NOTTINGHAM CITY TRANSPORT WORK TOGETHER TO PROVIDE AN EXCELLENT DEAL FOR GROUP RIDERS

THE GALLERIES OF JUSTICE MUSEUM, home to the Villainous Sheriff of Nottingham, proves to be just the ticket for Nottingham City Transport! The two organisations have joined forces in order to offer every person with a Group Rider ticket £1 of the admission price to the Galleries of Justice Museum on the day of issue of the ticket. This offer is available on all admissions prices including audio tours and performance led tours held during the daytime.

Anthony Carver-Smith, Marketing Manager at Nottingham City Transport and Faye Rollinson Business Development and Marketing Coordinator at the Galleries of Justice Museum came up with the idea after discussing ways of working together to provide added value to Group Rider users. Faye commented: ‘This is a new initiative which we hope will encourage bus users with time to spend in the city, to visit the Galleries of Justice Museum in Nottingham’s historic Lace Market and take part in one of our performance-led tours, all at a discounted rate!’ Anthony Carver-Smith adds, “The Galleries of Justice is a brilliant attraction for both visitors to Nottingham, and also local people. We’re delighted to offer our passengers this discount,
and are sure it will encourage them to discover our fascinating history at this unique experience.”

THE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR CITIZENSHIP AND THE LAW (NCCL) delivers an extensive education programme for the Galleries of Justice Museum and, as part of this initiative invited students to enter an exciting Robin Hood themed competition by drawing their favourite character from the Robin Hood story: The Villainous Sheriff; Robin Hood or Maid Marian. Six year old Georgia Smith from Abbey Road Primary School in West Bridgford is the talented student who has been announced as the winner of this competition. Georgia is in class IV and her drawing of Maid Marian was judged to be a very good representation of the character with excellent attention to detail and it will be used as a logo on educational material published by NCCL.

As well as having the pleasure of seeing her artwork used as a logo, Georgia’s picture has won her the opportunity to bring her entire class to visit the Galleries of Justice Museum where she and her fellow students will be encouraged to embrace the opportunity to discover real objects in real places outside the classroom. The NCCL team will bring History, Citizenship and Law to life, helping them to learn in the present and empower themselves to change the future.

Pollie Shorthouse, Head of Learning for NCCL commented ‘This competition provided the ideal opportunity for students to express their creativity and we are very pleased to have been involved with the schools that took part who all supplied some excellent entries, however Georgia’s entry was a clear winner! We look forward to welcoming Georgia and her class to take part in what we hope will be an exciting visit to the Galleries of Justice Museum and provide a stimulating, learning experience for them all.’

THE GALLERIES OF JUSTICE MUSEUM, the home of the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham, bucks the trend and despite the recession has attracted a record number of visitors this summer. The Museum of Crime and Punishment in the heart of Nottingham’s historic Lace Market attracted over 4000 visitors in the month of August, over 1000 more than in previous years. This is the clearest indication yet that heritage and tourism are still high on the agenda.

Nicola Burley, Director of Enterprise and Operations, said: ‘We focused very much on entertaining families and our special offer has attracted visitors from all over the world; children have been given the perfect opportunity to learn through what is essentially a fun experience in our historic and unique setting. We recognised that disposable income is at a premium and so we not only gave free entry to children 12 and under but also provided additional activities such as face-painting, craft activities, free balloons and lollies as well as dressing up; all of which represented excellent value for money, particularly for families on a budget. As an independent Museum we have to work hard to attract new and repeat visitors and so we offer a varied programme of events and activities all year round, and we are the perfect place to visit at Halloween half-term in October. When other attractions are restricting their opening hours we have remained open seven days a week, welcoming tourists whatever the weather!’

Jennifer Spencer, CEO of Experience Nottinghamshire, commented; ‘The Galleries of Justice Museum has established itself as one of the most popular attractions in the city, enjoying a great response from visitors. This achievement is a reflection of the ongoing efforts of the team there to provide an attraction with broad appeal, for both locals and visitors to the county.

Experience Nottinghamshire’s focus is on increasing the number of visitors to the county from the UK and beyond, and high quality attractions such as the Galleries of Justice Museum are essential in creating a fantastic experience for tourists when they get here.’

THE GALLERIES OF JUSTICE MUSEUM AND THE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR CITIZENSHIP AND THE LAW (NCCL) WIN AWARD FOR HERITAGE EDUCATION

THE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR CITIZENSHIP AND THE LAW (NCCL) delivers an extensive education programme for THE GALLERIES OF JUSTICE MUSEUM at The Shire Hall in Nottingham’s historic Lace Market. All its activities are designed to engage learners in the National Curriculum, such as History, Citizenship and Crime Prevention Activities among other cross-curricular subjects.

In May this year The NCCL and Galleries of Justice Museum submitted an application to the Heritage Education Trust to be considered for the prestigious Sandford Award for excellence in heritage education. In June a Sandford Award judge spent a day observing and experiencing the programmes offered by NCCL. The NCCL is delighted to announce that as a result of this, they have been awarded the Sandford Award. Judge Adam Clarke commented: ‘The Galleries of Justice Museum and NCCL offer an excellent experience for learners, giving the opportunity to experience the drama of the courtroom and the heritage of the justice system. The power of this learning in improving educational and social outcomes should not be underestimated. The award ‘in recognition of the excellence of their educational services and facilities and their outstanding contribution to Heritage Education’ will be presented at a ceremony in November.

Pollie Shorthouse, Head of Learning at NCCL, said: ‘This is an excellent mark of the quality of the education work we deliver. The Judge’s Report provides us with positive and constructive comments for further improvement. The judge was very impressed with us so thanks must go to every member of the team for their outstanding effort in helping us to achieve this award’.

Lord Sandford instituted an award scheme to encourage those responsible for running historic houses and guide their educational endeavours by monitoring standards. Entrants for Sandford Awards are assessed by a panel of independent judges. The current panel is drawn from professional educationalists including OFSTED Inspectors, former head teachers, education consultants and heritage property based education officers. Previous winners of this award are the Natural History Museum, the London Transport Museum and The Houses of Parliament among others.
